AoTTG Mods and Custom Maps: How to Install Them Without Breaking Anything

The mod scene is the reason the tribute game outlived its own engine. Here is how to use it.

Why mods matter here more than usual

The tribute game shipped with a small set of maps and a simple ruleset. Almost everything people remember about it (the enormous city maps, the racing courses, the boss titans, the rule rewrites) came from the community rather than the base game.

That is also why the scene survived a decade after its engine died. If you are installing AoTTG in 2026, you are mostly installing a mod platform.

Installing without breaking your game

1. Get vanilla running first, and launch it once. Never install a mod onto an install you have not confirmed works, because you will not know which one broke it.
2. Back up the game folder before your first mod. A copy-paste of the folder is enough and it turns every future problem into a thirty-second fix.
3. Install one mod at a time and launch between each. This is slower and it is the only way to find the one that conflicts.
4. In AoTTG 2, most custom maps arrive automatically when you join a server that uses them, so you usually do not need to install maps manually at all.
5. Keep mods and the base game in separate folders where the mod allows it, so you can remove one without reinstalling everything.

Where to find them safely

• Active Discord servers for AoTTG and AoTTG 2 are where current maps and mods actually circulate.
• Prefer anything a moderator pinned over anything a search engine surfaced.
• A map is data. If a "map pack" arrives as an executable installer, it is not a map pack.
• Nothing in this scene costs money. A paywall or a survey unlock is a scam, without exception.
